Privacy policy

This policy explains what information we handle when you use the Car Check UK website, why, and your rights. It covers this website only. The Car Check iPhone app has its own app privacy policy.

Who we are

Car Check UK is operated by Samet Macit. For any privacy question, email net29apps@gmail.com.

Information we handle

• Registration numbers you check. We send them to the DVLA Vehicle Enquiry Service and the DVSA MOT History API to get the vehicle's records. Results are cached on our servers, and refreshed after an hour, so repeat checks are fast. The cache holds vehicle data only, not who searched. You don't need an account, and we don't link checks to your identity.
• Technical data. Like most websites, our hosting provider (Cloudflare) records server logs, including IP addresses, browser type and the pages requested. We use them to run the site securely, to stop abuse such as automated scraping, and to fix errors.
• Partner link clicks. When you click a partner link we record which offer and placement was clicked and the page you came from, so we can understand what's useful. This doesn't identify you.
• Emails you send us. If you contact us, we use your message and email address to reply.

Vehicle data isn't personal data on its own, and the DVLA and DVSA services we use don't give us keeper names or addresses.

Cookies

We don't set advertising or analytics cookies on this website. If we add analytics in the future, we'll update this policy and ask for consent where the law requires it. When you follow a partner link, the partner and its affiliate network (Rakuten Advertising or Awin) may set cookies on their own websites to record the referral. Their privacy policies apply there.

Why we use information (legal basis)

We rely on our legitimate interests in providing the free check, keeping the website secure and understanding how it's used. When you email us, we rely on our legitimate interest in replying to you.

Who we share it with

• DVLA and DVSA, to retrieve vehicle records for the registrations you check.
• Our hosting provider, Cloudflare, which processes data on our behalf.
• Partners you choose to visit, only from the moment you click through to their website.

We don't sell your information.

How long we keep it

Cached vehicle results are replaced with fresh data when a vehicle is checked again more than an hour later. Server logs are kept by our hosting provider for a short period, typically days rather than weeks. Emails are kept for as long as needed to deal with your enquiry.

Your rights

Under UK data protection law you can ask to access, correct or delete personal data we hold about you, or object to how we use it. Email us to make a request. If you're unhappy with how we've handled your data, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk.
