Why compare

Same test, very different prices

Every MOT follows the same DVSA rules, but garages set their own prices up to the legal maximum. Comparing takes a minute.

Up to £54.85

That's the legal maximum for a car MOT. Many garages charge less, and some discount MOTs booked with a service.

How to pass your MOT first time

According to DVSA's data, lamps and lighting are the most common reason for failure, followed by suspension, tyres and brakes. Plenty of fails are things you can spot yourself in ten minutes:

  • Walk round with the lights on: headlights, indicators, brake lights, fog lights and the number plate light.
  • Check tyre tread (at least 1.6mm) and look for cuts, bulges and damage.
  • Test the wipers and top up the screen wash.
  • Look for windscreen chips in the driver's line of sight: damage over 10mm in the central area can fail.
  • Check the horn, seatbelts and mirrors, and make sure no warning lights stay on.
  • Clean the number plates and clear out the boot so the tester can get to the seatbelts.

Our MOT checklist covers 20 checks, and the most common MOT failures explains how to avoid each one.

MOT and service together?

An MOT checks your car meets the legal minimum on the day; a service keeps it running well. Booking both at once saves a trip, and some garages discount the MOT when you do. Read MOT vs service to see what each one covers.

MOT booking questions

How much does an MOT cost?

The maximum fee a test centre can charge for a car MOT is £54.85, and many garages charge less, especially when you book online or combine it with a service. There's no VAT on the MOT fee.

How early can I get an MOT?

Up to a month (minus a day) before your current MOT runs out, and you'll keep the same renewal date. For example, if it runs out on 15 May, the earliest you can test and keep the date is 16 April.

What happens if my car fails its MOT?

You'll get a list of the faults. If you leave the car at the test centre for repairs and it's retested within 10 working days, the partial retest is free. Some items, such as lamps, wipers and tyres, can be retested free by the end of the next working day.

Can I drive my car without an MOT?

Only to a pre-booked MOT or to a garage for repairs required after a fail. Otherwise you can be fined up to £1,000, and your insurance may be invalid.
