The standards
ULEZ standards at a glance
Compliance depends on the vehicle's Euro emissions standard, not its age. Registration dates are only a rough guide.
| Vehicle | Minimum standard | Rough guide |
|---|---|---|
| Petrol cars and small vans | Euro 4 | Generally registered from 2006 (many from 2001) |
| Diesel cars and small vans | Euro 6 | Generally registered from September 2015 |
| Motorbikes | Euro 3 | Generally registered from July 2007 |
| Electric and hydrogen | Zero emission | Always compliant |
How our ULEZ estimate works
DVLA records a Euro status for many vehicles. When it's there, we compare it directly with the standard for the fuel type. When it isn't, we estimate from the fuel type and the date the car was first registered, because new cars had to meet each Euro standard from a set date.
Estimates are right for most cars, but some vehicles met a standard earlier than the rules required, and imports can differ. Treat our result as a guide and confirm with TfL before you drive in the zone.
Other clean air zones
London isn't the only city charging older vehicles. Several UK cities run clean air zones or low emission zones, and the rules and charges differ between them. Check the GOV.UK clean air zone service before you travel.
If your car isn't compliant
Paying £12.50 a day adds up quickly if you drive in London often. Many drivers in that position switch to a compliant car: start with a free valuation to see what yours is worth, and use our ULEZ guide to understand your options.
ULEZ questions
How much is the ULEZ charge?
£12.50 a day for cars, motorbikes and vans up to 3.5 tonnes that don't meet the standards. The zone runs 24 hours a day, every day except Christmas Day, and covers almost all of Greater London.
Is your ULEZ result official?
No. We estimate compliance from the Euro status DVLA holds, or from the fuel type and first registration date when it isn't recorded. Always confirm with TfL's vehicle checker before you drive in the zone.
Which petrol cars are ULEZ compliant?
Petrol cars need to meet Euro 4. That's generally cars registered from 2006, and many from 2001, but check the specific car because some older models qualify and some don't.
Are hybrid cars ULEZ compliant?
A hybrid is judged on the Euro standard of its engine, so a petrol hybrid needs Euro 4 and a diesel hybrid needs Euro 6. Most hybrids sold in the UK are petrol hybrids that comfortably meet this.
