Is the car check really free?
Yes. The vehicle details, tax and MOT status, full MOT history, mileage analysis and ULEZ estimate are free, with no sign-up and no limit on the number of cars you check in normal use.
Where does the data come from?
Vehicle details and tax status come from the DVLA Vehicle Enquiry Service. MOT history and odometer readings come from the DVSA MOT History API. We're independent and not affiliated with DVLA or DVSA.
What doesn't the free check show?
Official vehicle data doesn't include outstanding finance, stolen markers or insurance write-offs. For those, get a full history check in the Car Check app, powered by Experian.
Can it tell me if a car has been clocked?
It flags any MOT where the recorded mileage is lower than an earlier test, and compares the car's yearly mileage with the UK average. It can't detect clocking that happened between tests if later readings look consistent, so always check the service history too.
Is the ULEZ result official?
No, it's an estimate based on the Euro status DVLA holds, or the fuel type and registration date when Euro status isn't available. Always confirm with TfL's vehicle checker before driving in London.
Do I need the app?
No. The free check works in any browser. The iPhone app adds MOT and tax reminders, a garage for your cars, a number plate scanner and full history reports.
